Their grandmother, Beatrice Saville, founded the Actors’ Equity Association. Purl and her family moved to Japan when she was five years old, where her father worked for Nippon Unicar. She studied acting at the Toho Geino Academy and appeared in plays at Tokyo’s Imperial Theatre, including “The King and I,” “Oliver!,” and “The Miracle Worker.” Toho discovered Purl, and she appeared in a number of films while in Japan. At the age of 15, she returned to the United States.
